LACONIA —A chimney fire that spread into the
attic caused an estimated $30,000 damage to a
residence in The Weirs Thursday night.
The fire, which was quickly extinguished by
Laconia and Gilford fire personnel, temporarily
displaced members of the Marconi family from their
home at 85 Plantation Road.
The family was taken in by neighbors, said
Laconia Fire Chief Ken Erickson. He added that no
one was injured but that the three-bedroom ranch
sustained "quite a bit of damage" which made it
uninhabitable.
It is believed that the fire began in a wooden
partition between two metal chimney pipes and that
it had been burning for some time before it moved
up into the lightweight wood truss attic, said
Erickson.
Laconia Fire Lt. Chris Shipp and the Weirs
Beach engine were first on the scene, Erickson
said, explaining that Shipp immediately called for
a second alarm due to the lack of hydrants in the
Plantation Road area. It was feared that a line
would have to be run some 900 feet from the
Marconi home down to Endicott St. East, but
firefighters were able to knock the fire down with
water from the internal tanks on the Laconia and
Gilford engines, said the chief.
